WISDOM TEETH EXTRACTION

Wisdom teeth are your four permanent adult teeth found on the top and bottom of the rear corners of your mouth. These are the last permanent teeth to develop in your mouth and typically crop up between the ages of 17 and 25 years. Some people never develop wisdom teeth, while others have them grow in without any problems at all, but many need them to be taken out.

If wisdom teeth do not have the proper space to grow, extraction will likely be necessary. Untreated wisdom teeth will cause a number of dental issues and will inevitably involve removing the affected tooth. It is recommended that a dentist or oral surgeon perform the extraction before any severe issues or pain begin.

TOOTH EXTRACTION

If you have one or more teeth that are broken or decayed, then applying a filling, crown or other relevant treatment will always be the primary course of action. However, if irreparable damage has taken place, we will likely have to take the affected tooth out.

The use of X-rays on the affected area(s) beforehand is the best way to plan the removal of any teeth. Before the operation you may elect to have IV anesthesia ranging from conscious sedation to general anesthesia. In this case, proper instructions will be provided for your preparation. Simple tooth extractions can be performed right in our clinic.

A local anesthetic injection is used for most basic tooth removals. If you’re tense or uncomfortable with the thought of this procedure then further medications can be offered for your comfort.  During the actual procedure you can expect to feel pressure, but you should not feel any pain. Make sure to alert the dentist or oral surgeon if any discomfort or pain is felt during the extraction process so that proper steps can taken to eliminate your pain.

BONE GRAFTING

In order to restore your bone to its previous state following instances of gum disease, tooth extraction, tooth loss, or trauma, a variety of dental bone grafting procedures may be implemented. It is not commonly known, but steady bone loss will occur if missing teeth are not replaced. There has been a significant decline for the need for bone grafting in recent years but it is still required in some cases. If necessary, the procedure is now performed easily and is minimally invasive.

Restoring and maintaining facial bone structure is imperative. In some cases the bone under your gum may have depleted and is now inadequate for the treatment you need. Before implants can be placed, adding bone to your jaw is required for strength and stability. These procedures typically involve adding bone or bone-like material to depleted areas so that the implants can be adequately placed. Once the grafted bone (or bone-like material) is placed in the voided areas, the cells will penetrate and the bone will begin to fuse and rebuild. Your cells, over a period of time, will begin to remodel the grafted material into functioning bone. This process may sound frightening and intimidate you initially, but rest assured, bone grafting in the oral cavity has become a relatively painless and routine process.

DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental Implants have become the most popular and recommended option for tooth, bridge, and denture replacement. These implants simply act as the teeth’s natural roots to help prevent bone loss that would commonly occur due to missing teeth. Dental implants involve a 2-step process. The first step is the placement of a small titanium “root replacement” where the original root used to be. The second step, after the implant has properly “settled”, is to place a new tooth onto it. Because of the implants’ strength and durability, once the procedure is complete, you will be able to eat the same as you normally would have with your original, natural teeth.  Another benefit of dental implants is to replace a section of missing teeth. A bridge (or row of teeth), in this case, can be fixed onto two dental implants. In this way, a bridge (for a section of teeth) or an entire full arch denture can be mounted permanently in place and you will feel as if you have a full set of teeth again.
